WHATS OUR MISSION

IS JUP CHANTING? WHAT DOES THE GURU INSTRUCT US ?

IS JUP CHANTING?

How often is the sangat reminded in our Gurdwara talks by ragis, gianis and parcharaks to ‘Naam japo’ and then led to recite ‘Waheguru’ umpteen times in as many differing tunes? Are we aware that, in fact, Gurbani has rejected chanting as futile and a waste of spiritual energy?

Let us take a look at this verse that is often quoted to support chanting.

(SGGS 563 Wadhans M: 5)

Kar Kirapaa Thaerae Gun Gaavaa ||

Naanak Naam Japath Sukh Paavaa ||4||5||

The online translation is given as :

“Show mercy unto me, that I may sing Your Glorious Praises. O Nanak, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I obtain peace.”

Our biggest tragedy is to translate Naam as “name”. Gurbani says God cannot have a proper name. All of God’s “names” are his Gunn/virtues.

The second biggest tragedy of Sikhi has been to translate Jup as “chanting.”

BHEKH ? WHAT DOES GURBANI SAY ABOUT OUTER APPEARANCES – CLOTHES, SYMBOLS, RELIGIOUS MARKS ETC.?

GURU NANAK’S SIKH IS A HOUSEHOLDER

GURU NANAK’S SIKH IS A HOUSEHOLDER

Sikhism is propounded on three basic rules that serve as a guide for a spiritually elevated existence. The three principles are popularly known as Kirt Kamani, Naam Japna and Wandkey Chhakhana.

Guru Nanak Sahib ji and our Sikh gurus led by example with a life as householders. For the physical day-to-day affairs, Guru Nanak advised his Sikh to be a spiritually honest householder (Kirt Kamani), instead of being a renunciate as this is equivalent to being a beggar. This statute is one of Guru Nanak Sahib ji’s important social reforms at that time.

Eye witness Account by Shah Muhammad of Second Anglo-Sikh War- An Ode to the Valor and Bravery of the Khalsa Forces

One of the Most Read Odes in Sikh History – Vaar of Shah Muhammad

Shah Muhammad, the Lok Kavi or Bard of the Common people, narrates the entire story of the intrigues, the plots and Machiavellian tales of treachery and murders at the Lahor Darbar (Court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh)  that followed the untimely death of the most powerful and most feared (by his enemies) but also the Most Benevolent King the Punjab had ever seen (most loved by his subjects Hindu, Muslim and Sikh). One by one seven out of eight able successors to the throne were eliminated by infighting and treachery and internal plots.

A Study of the Fifth Pauri in Asa Ki Var

A Study of the Fifth Pauri in Asa Ki Var

Asa Ki Var is found in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji from page 462 to page 475. It is an ode or lyrical verse meaning “A Ballad of Hope.” In the Asa Di Var bani, there are saloks (verses) prior to each of the 24 paurees (stanzas).

Let’s take a look at the fifth pauree on page 465. There are two saloks prior to this pauree. Going by the Rahao principle, the main message of the entire collection of the two saloks and pauree is contained in the pauree’s final verse ‘Ko Rehai N Bhareeai Paaeeai.’

Each of the two saloks being illustrative or explanatory of the pauree would have their own sub-messages. Each of these sub-messages would be found in the final verse of each salok (in the absence of a Rahao Verse),

Nanakdass Dr Kuldip Singh encounters christians…and explains Guru Nanak Ji

ENCOUNTERS OF NANAKSDAS WITH CHRISTIANS

A NOTE FOR THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE INTELLIGENT SIKH BOYS AND GIRLS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 8 AND 12 YEARS

(1) November 1958 – Birmingham, UK. The first Gurdwara built by Sikhs at Smethwick a suburb of Birmingham was in a big Church which the Sikhs had purchased alongwith its 5-6 acre land for a sum of only £10,000, when the exchange value of pound was Rs. 13.40/- only. The attendance at Churches had gone down tremendously and on account of this the padre could not be paid as well as the annual repairs of the Churches could not be carried out. The Christians were averse to pull down the Churches and felt happy if somebody could utilize the Church as such.

(2) June 1969 – Glasgow. I stayed for a month at the Doctors residency of Gartnavel Mental Hospital before I could find my own house. I found that there were 20 medical students of both sexes who were looking after the patients during the night for which they were provided with free boarding and lodging. I learnt from them that none of them was prepared to take any money from their parents for their studies after the age of 18 years. They were all earning and paying for their medical studies. They were very devoted hard working men and women who were not going to Church at all. On discussing with them I learnt that all of them did believe in earning their daily bread by honest means. I explained to them that even though they were against practicing any religion and did not read Bible, this was the essence of Christianity which they were practicing.

The Sikhs are neither Hindus nor Muslims – NA HUM HINDU NA MUSSALMANN

The Sikhs are neither Hindus nor Muslims

Bhai Madan Singh U. K.

Sikhism is the most simple and straightforward religion, but it is a tragedy that various vested interests have tried to misinterpret the philosophy of Sikhism. The Hindu elite have, since long, been trying to define Sikhism as an offshoot of Hinduism because, according to them, most of the Sikhs have/had their roots in Hindu families. The Indian regime too is bent upon labelling the Sikhs as a branch of Hinduism. Sikhs have not been granted independent identity in the Indian constitution.. Due to this the Sikh representatives had rejected and refused to give their assent to it.

The theological principles, the articles of faith, the way of life, rites and rituals etc of the Sikhs are altogether different from those of the Hindus but the Indian government has, still, denied the Sikhs their right to have a separate law of their own. The Hind law has been forced upon them against their will.

DEH SHIVA IS ADDRESSED TO CHANDI AND IS NOT SIKH NATIONAL ANTHEM

DEH SHIVA IS ADDRESSED TO CHANDI AND IS NOT SIKH NATIONAL ANTHEM

Chandi Charitar Ukti Bilas and Dey Shiva bar moye

It is preposterous to say all that is contained in Dasam Granth is the results of Guru Gobind Singh’s own penmanship. Such assertions coming from the anti-Sikh forces can be expected but I feel sorry and offended to go through the pronouncements of such ardent Sikhs as Piara Singh Padam. They have bent over backward to prove that all those were the original creations of
Guruji who had chosen to write under the pen-names of Ram and Siam. If they stress that those are the conceptions of Guruji then why do they plead for their publication in a separate volume? Could Guru Gobind Singh write such stories and such stanzas which the readers would find in Chritropakhyan (Female Attributes) 2 to 20, 402, and some of the Hikayat (Fables) rendered into English by the writer of this article? Not only the Attributes and the Fables, some parts in many other Chapters, such as Krishna Avatar are equally erotic. Could readers sit down with their wives, sisters, mothers and children and read aloud these tales? Most of them are epitome of degradation to womanhood. They are as pornographic as the present day adult movies.

Apart from the obscene substance, there is lot of material, which is quite contrary and offensive to the philosophy of Guru Gobind Singh and the Sikhism as promoted by first nine Masters.

Their presentation in one volume, in conjunction with the Celestial Revelations of the Tenth Master, was the biggest folly of the time. Now, the time has come to dispense with this amalgamation of Bani with the contemptible temporal aspect of life, lest it is too late to prevent irreparable damage to the thinking of our illuminated and inquisitive coming generations, particularly in the west.

THE HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT THE LAST WORDS OF GURU GOBIND SINGH JI –

Bhai Gurdass Ji – Scribe Extraordinaire – and an accomplished poet in his own right

BHAI GURDAS JI AND HIS RACHNAVA

Who was Bhai Gurdas ji?

A nephew of the third Guru, Guru Amar Das ji, Bhai Gurdas was a first cousin of Mata Bhani ji, mother of Guru Arjan Dev ji. He inscribed the entire text of the first copy of the Sikh Scripture, the Adi Granth, under the supervision of the fifth Sikh Guru.

Bhai ji had come into contact with Sikhi due to circumstances after his mother’s death. As he was very young, he was cared for and brought up in a Sikhi household by his father’s brother – Guru Amardas ji who was already guru then. So his family consisted of Guru Amardas ji’s two daughters -Danee ji and Bhani ji (who would later marry Guru Ramdas ji). This is why he is referred to as Guru Arjun ji’s mama.

The Sikhi influence therefore was natural. If we read his 49 Vaars, 6 Chands and 672 Kabits and Swayeays we get a sense that he was

1. a serious, deep thinking and philosophical Gursikh.

2. a linguist of Sanskrit and Brij languages.

3. a dedicated researcher.

Such traits cannot be acquired upon instruction from someone. They come with due diligence, hard work and Guru’s blessings.  In the difficult years of Prithi Chand’s rivalry with Guru Arjun ji, and when the sangats/ congregation in the guru-darbar were lured by Prithi – Bhai Gurdas ji was relied upon to do parchar. Thus he was also an effective parcharak/preacher.
